Starting A Home Catering Business
One of the hottest industries right now is catering. There are lots of opportunities for anyone who is thinking of starting a home catering business. The unfortunate news is that many small businesses fail within their first two years. To prevent this from happening to you, it is important to do plenty of research and planning before launching any type of business. First, think about whether or not catering is a good fit for you.
Catering involves working with both food and people. If you have restaurant experience that you enjoyed, you may be a good candidate for your own catering business. If you hated working in a restaurant you likely won't like catering. If you do decide that catering is what you want to do, think about exactly what you want to offer. Some caterers have specialties. Others are more general in scope. You will also need to think about how large you want your business to be. If your business is small you may be able to run it on your own or with a limited staff. As your business grows, it may be necessary to hire more people to help you.
It is important to have all necessary licenses before launching your business. For this, you will need to check with your county or city government building to find out exactly what you need. Health inspection is also important for any business that deals with food. You must have a facility for preparing and storing food that is up to code. You will also need the right equipment for transporting the food to various events. A van is a definite must and some companies may even need more than one depending on their size. If you will be working from your home your business will likely be quite small so one vehicle may be enough.
You can learn more about starting a home catering business by reading books on the subject. There are quite a few titles devoted to this, including the following: How to Start a Home-Based Catering Business by Denise Vivaldo, Start & Run a Catering Business by George Erdosh and How to Run a Catering Business from Home by Christopher Egerton Thomas. These titles and others like them can provide you with valuable insight and information on the subject of starting your own home based business in the catering industry.
